A First-Timer’s Guide to Okaloosa Island, Florida

Are you considering planning your first vacation to Okaloosa Island? You may already have a few questions. Is Okaloosa Island part of Fort Walton Beach? How close is it to Destin? Will you need a car? And most importantly, where should you stay?

Located along Florida’s beautiful Emerald Coast, Okaloosa Island offers the white-sand beaches and emerald-green Gulf waters the area is famous for, but with a more relaxed atmosphere than some of its busier neighbors. It’s also conveniently located between Fort Walton Beach and Destin, making it easy to enjoy the best of all three during one vacation.

Before you book your first trip, here’s what you need to know about visiting Okaloosa Island!

Where is Okaloosa Island?

Okaloosa Island is a narrow barrier island along Florida’s Emerald Coast, located directly south of Fort Walton Beach and just west of Destin.

The island stretches between the Gulf of Mexico and Santa Rosa Sound, so you’re never far from the water. Highway 98 runs across the island, connecting it to mainland Fort Walton Beach via Brooks Bridge to the west and toward Destin via the Marler Bridge to the east.

If you’re flying in, Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS) is the closest major airport and is approximately 20–25 minutes from Okaloosa Island, depending on traffic.

Is Okaloosa Island Part of Fort Walton Beach?

This is a question that can get a little confusing for first-time visitors.

Okaloosa Island and Fort Walton Beach aren’t exactly the same place. Fort Walton Beach is the mainland city immediately north of the island, while Okaloosa Island is the barrier island just across the bridge.

However, you’ll frequently see accommodations on Okaloosa Island described as “Fort Walton Beach vacation rentals.” The island is where you’ll find the area’s Gulf-front beaches and many of its beachfront condo complexes, but Fort Walton Beach has more recognition amongst visitors, so people often use the two interchangeably.

If your goal is to wake up close to the Gulf, walk directly onto the sand, and still be just minutes from everything in Fort Walton Beach, Okaloosa Island is where you’ll likely want to stay.

How Far is Okaloosa Island From Destin?

It’s actually quite close! Okaloosa Island sits approximately four miles west of Destin, and you can typically drive between the two in about 10–15 minutes when traffic is light.

That makes Okaloosa Island a great home base if you want a quieter place to stay without giving up easy access to Destin for nightlife or more diverse activity. You can spend your morning relaxing on the beach, head into Destin for shopping, dining, boating, or an evening at the harbor, and then return to your condo on Okaloosa Island.

Just keep in mind that Highway 98 can get quite busy during peak summer travel periods, so drive times may be longer depending on the season and time of day.

Do You Need a Car on Okaloosa Island?

Whether you want a car or not really depends on how much exploring you plan to do.

If your vacation is mostly about relaxing at the beach, you may not need a car. Depending on where you stay, restaurants, beach access, The Boardwalk, The Island Pier, Gulfarium Marine Adventure Park, and other attractions may be within walking distance or a very short ride.

However, we typically recommend having a car, as it gives you much more flexibility. You’ll want one if you plan to explore downtown Fort Walton Beach, spend time in Destin, go grocery shopping for your condo, visit attractions away from the island, or take day trips elsewhere along the Emerald Coast.

For most first-time visitors who want to see more than the immediate area surrounding their condo, having a car is the easiest option. If you’ve been to Okaloosa Island before, and your main goal is relaxing on the beach, you could get away without having a car.

Is Okaloosa Island Crowded?

Like most Florida beach destinations, Okaloosa Island is busiest during summer, spring break, and major holiday weekends. But one of the reasons travelers choose Okaloosa Island is that it generally has a more relaxed feel than nearby Destin.

One reason is the island’s development. Rather than being lined with towering high-rise resorts, Okaloosa Island primarily features smaller and mid-rise condominium communities. This helps give parts of the island a more open, less densely developed feel, which a lot of guests really like.

If avoiding the biggest crowds is important to you, consider visiting during late summer, fall, or winter. You’ll still get the beauty of the Emerald Coast with a different pace than the peak summer season.

Where Should You Stay on Okaloosa Island?

For a first visit, staying in a Gulf-front condo is hard to beat. You’ll have the beach right outside your door while still being close to Fort Walton Beach and Destin.

The best Okaloosa Island condo complex for your trip depends on how you like to vacation.

Families who want lots of resort-style amenities may prefer larger communities with multiple pools, splash areas, or lazy rivers. Waterscape or Destin West are good resorts to consider if these amenities are essential.

Groups and multi-generational families may want a spacious two-, three-, or four-bedroom condo with a full kitchen and plenty of room to spread out. Azure is perfect for multi-generational families traveling together. Couples or travelers looking for a quieter beach trip may prefer one of the island’s smaller condo complexes like Island Surf or Emerald Towers West.
