When you think about things to do in Fort Walton Beach, your first thoughts will likely be about the stunning shorelines and azure waters. Yet, located just seven miles north of Fort Walton Beach, you’ll find the Air Force Armament Museum. This museum is the only one in the world dedicated to showcasing the rich history of Air Force armament and its myriad platforms of delivery. With over 29 different aircraft on display, including iconic models like the AC-130, B-17, and B-52, as well as numerous pieces of armament such as the Sparrow, Sidewinder, and MOAB, this museum promises an awe-inspiring visit for the whole family.
History
The Air Force Armament Museum has an intriguing story dating back to its conception and approval in 1974.
Initially, finding a suitable structure on Eglin Air Force Base was a challenge until 1976, when an old Enlisted Club facility became available, creating the Armament Museum. To support and sustain this dedicated institution, the Air Force Armament Museum Foundation (AFAMF), a non-profit organization, was established. By growing its artifact collection between 1976 and 1981, the museum drew an impressive average of 80,000 visitors annually. Unfortunately, in 1981, the building housing the collection was condemned, leading to the museum’s temporary closure. The AFAMF’s perseverance paid off when funding efforts kicked off in 1984. By mid-1985, $1.2 million in private and corporate donations had been raised, enabling the construction of a new 28,000-square-foot museum. Finally, in November 1985, the museum was officially deeded to the United States Air Force and opened to the public, marking a triumphant new chapter.
